(157) The status of a friend!

Long time ago, in a village called Silbaripuram, there was a simple man named Kunchu. Since he used to grow sugarcane, everyone called him 'Panchara' (Sugar) Kunchu. All the villagers liked him very much, and Kunchu felt proud to have such good friends. One day, some strange disease came to the sugarcane plants in that area, and all of Kunchu’s farming was ruined. He became poor and hungry. At that time, his friends were busy with other work and farming, so they didn’t have any money problems. Kunchu went to his close friends and asked for a few silver coins as a loan. But the answers he got were very disappointing. The friendships he had kept sweet like sugar in his heart started to feel bitter. After a few days, Kunchu accepted this reality. Then, he started growing rice in a small piece of land. When the time came to harvest the rice, he again asked his friends for help—but again, they refused. But Kunchu didn’t give up. He began cutting the rice crop all by himself. As he ...

(145) An equal sharing!

Once upon a time, there was a good market in Silbaripuram. To reach this market easily, one had to take a single-track path next to the forest. The straight road would require a very long journey. Therefore, people chose this path. One day, a merchant was traveling along it. He had several bundles with him. In addition, he had a pouch of fruits tied at his waist. It contained 100 gold coins. As he walked, he didn't notice that this pouch of gold had fallen into the grass by the roadside. He unknowingly walked on. Some time later, two friends were walking and talking behind him. Then, the first friend saw the pouch. Suddenly, he bent down and picked it up. Then he excitedly said, "Today is my lucky day. I will live comfortably in a foreign land with this." Hearing this, the second friend said, "You shouldn't say that. We should say it is both our luck." Immediately, understanding its meaning, the first friend said, "I was the one who bent down and picke...

(133) A test of real friendship!

Once upon a time, in a village called Silbaripuram, there lived a merchant named Ravunni. A man named Keshavan lived and worked in his household as a servant. One day, Ravunni's business earned an unexpectedly large profit. He immediately called Keshavan and said, "Hey, you need to invite all those who love me. You must arrange a grand feast and a party for them." Keshavan immediately went out to the road in front of the house and shouted, "Oh no! Somebody please run here! The house is on fire!" Many people from the neighbourhood heard his loud cries, but no one paid any attention. However, a few passersby and a couple of acquaintances ran and gathered in the courtyard. Just then, Ravunni opened the door and came out. Keshavan said to his master, "You told me to invite only those who love you. So, to find out how many people would come to help during a crisis, I went out and shouted like this!" Ravunni agreed, "That's right. The people who co...

(74) A friendship circle!

Once upon a time,  Hoja  had a lot of money. Because of that, he had friends all around him. This was because Hoja had no hesitation in spending money. Seeing all this, an elderly neighbor, upon meeting Hoja, asked - "Hoja, you have so many companions. But how many would there be now?" Hoja replied without any hesitation - "I don't know how many friends I have now. However, the day I become poor, I can certainly tell you exactly how many companions I have." Hoja was thus able to simply convey to the neighbor the idea that the truth about who will stand by you can only be understood in times of trouble.

(46) A friendship problem!

Once, Damu, the woodcutter from the land of Silbaripuram, had to go deep into the forest to look for good quality wood. There were many animals living there. An eagle and a wildcat were friends with a wolf living deep inside the forest. One day, the wolf was attacked by a tiger. However, since the wolf ran a long distance trying to escape, its two friends did not come to know about it. When Damu walked past the wolf, he heard its cries. Damu felt pity and gave the wolf food and water. Out of gratitude, the wolf followed Damu. After a few days, the wolf regained its former health. However, at the same time, the eagle and the wildcat were searching for the wolf throughout the forest. In the meantime, some bird came and informed the eagle that the wolf had started living in the village. Subsequently, the eagle and the wildcat came behind Damu's house at night. They were both very hungry at that time. The wildcat then said, "You snatch the chicks. I will eat the hen." Hearin...

(40) A Horoscope!

Veeramani and Damu, two friends, lived in a village in the kingdom of Silbaripuram. Once, they enrolled to study at the kingdom’s best astrology school. After spending two years residing and studying at the ashram, they bid farewell to their Guru (teacher) and started walking towards their village via the shortcut through the forest. "We must somehow manage to become the court astrologers at the palace," said Veeramani, and Damu agreed. However, at the same time, Damu was thinking differently. He muttered to himself, "The palace does not need two astrology scholars. They will only appoint one person. I must get that job somehow!" As they were walking, the King, who was passing through the forest for a hunt, came across them. The King dismounted his horse and inquired who they were. The King immediately said, "I need to know if you have studied astrology well. Damu, you predict my future. And then, Veeramani." The King kept Veeramani aside. Damu then laid ...

(37) A Golden Friendship!

In the Silbaripuram region, there was an ancestral home that kept many pets. Among them, a cat and a dog were very close friends. It was their habit to share whatever food they received. One day, as the cat lay down to sleep, a thought struck him: "The master loves this dog more than me. My importance in this house is fading. If things continue like this, I might even be kicked out soon." That night, after much plotting, he made a decision—he had to trap the dog in some mischief so that he would face the master’s wrath. At daybreak, the master left for the market. He usually returned in the afternoon and sat down for lunch immediately. The cat planned his move to coincide with the master's return. At that time, the dog was fast asleep on the veranda; his main job, after all, was guarding the house all night. Seizing the opportunity, the cat lurked in the kitchen, watching everything closely. The cat noticed a bowl of meat curry served for the master’s lunch. Seeing the m...

(28) A Dog's Master!

No one really knows exactly when dogs became man’s best friend. However, I have had the chance to read many interesting stories regarding this. Here is one such story. Many centuries ago, in a place called Silbaripuram, the town and the forest were closely intertwined. In those days, wolves used to live together in packs of fifty or a hundred. But they stayed deep inside the forest. On the other hand, there were many dogs that used to roam near the forest edges in search of food. But they were not friendly with humans at that time. Once, one of these dogs wandered into the forest. He met a fox and they became friends. But when they lay down to sleep at night, the dog saw the bright moon and started barking. The fox said, "You have ruined my sleep too. Get out of here!" Moving on, the dog met a goat. They became companions. The next day, at midnight, the goat expressed his displeasure upon hearing the dog's barking. As he moved to another area, he befriended a cow. There ...

(22) The real friendship!

Once upon a time, in the Silbaripuram forest, a lion, a lioness, and their four cubs were living together. One day, the lion went out for hunting. During the hunt, he lay in wait near a fox’s den. When a fox and its pup came out of the den, the lion pounced! However, he couldn’t catch the big fox. Instead, he caught the fox's pup. The lion brought it back home to provide food for his family. But the lioness said, "Don't eat this fox pup. Let him stay here and grow up playing with our children!" The lion agreed. After a few days, the fox pup and the lion cubs became very good friends. One day, while they were playing like this, a wild elephant passed by. The fox pup got terrified of the elephant and screamed, "Friends, the elephant is coming to kill us! Everyone run!" The fox ran a long distance and hid inside a hole. However, the lion cubs didn't mind the elephant at all and stood their ground. Realizing it was a lion’s den, the elephant got scared and ...

(18) The greedy friend!

Once upon a time, it was the period when King Vikraman ruled over the Kingdom of Silbaripuram. One day, close friends Cheeran and Somu were heading to the market when Somu noticed a cloth bundle lying hidden among the leaves. He quickly picked it up. While Cheeran stood there trembling with fear, Somu opened it to take a look. He exclaimed, "Arre, look here da! This is full of gold coins!" Immediately, Cheeran said, "Havo! Our poverty is finally over with this. Give me exactly half." However, Somu’s reply was quite different: "I am the one who picked this up. Therefore, these coins belong only to me. I won’t give you even a single one. I’m going home to pack my essential belongings and escaping to Kosalapuram." Cheeran didn't say another word. He simply walked toward the market, while Somu hurried home. After reaching home, Somu took his bundle and started trekking toward Kosalapuram. At the same time, the palace guards were searching high and low acr...

(12) A wandering Fox!

In ancient times, the region sharing a border between Silbaripuram and the neighboring kingdom of Kosalapuram was a dense forest. It was home to many wild animals. One day, a fox was wandering in search of food but couldn't find anything. Frustrated, he sat down to rest and noticed a donkey nearby. Since it was the peak of summer, the donkey was also struggling to find enough to eat. Gradually, the fox and the donkey became friends. The fox said, "Because of the constant hunting by tigers and lions, the number of animals here has dwindled. Moreover, the small prey I usually catch are all in hiding. Therefore, I am going to the village to catch the chickens raised by humans." The donkey agreed, saying, "In that case, I will come with you. There are plenty of farmers' fields there with lush crops." As they walked through the forest toward the village, the birds and monkeys mocked the fox. "Hey, Fox! Aren't you supposed to be clever? Why are you roami...
