(160) The story of a sculptor!

Long ago, a sculptor came from a neighboring country and settled in the land of Kushan. The king appointed him as the royal sculptor of the palace. His name was Unnithan. He worked sincerely and skillfully for many years and earned a lot of wealth. Eventually, the time came for him to retire. Before he left, the king called him and said, "You have served here very well. I am proud and happy with your work. But before you go, I have one last request — build a house for me on the royal land. However, I will not be paying you any wages for this job." Out of fear and respect for the king, the sculptor agreed. But as he left, he thought to himself, "Why should I put effort into something for which I won’t even be paid? I'm going to return to my homeland anyway and live comfortably in a big house with the wealth I've earned." So, he began working on the house without much interest. He didn’t bother to use high-quality materials or ensure the work was done proper...

(144) The public welfare!

Once, election campaigning began in Kerala. A prominent daily newspaper published an article praising a leading political leader. Here's a summary of what was written: The article featured a picture of the leader alongside a picture of an ordinary party supporter. Doctors had advised that this ordinary man's mother needed immediate surgery. It could be done at a famous hospital in Thiruvananthapuram at a low cost. However, patients were on a waiting list that stretched from one to two years. These patients were prolonging their days by taking strong medications. Feeling that things were going this way, the man sought a shortcut. He arrived at the prominent leader's house in the morning and obtained a letter addressed to the Thiruvananthapuram hospital authorities. His mother's surgery took place within the week he submitted the letter there. The woman was saved. This expression of gratitude was used by the journalists as an election strategy. The newspaper stirred up e...

(143) A moneylender!

A long time ago, in the land of Silbaripuram, a guru's ashram was famous. However, a greedy moneylender emerged in that land, gradually becoming a wealthy landlord. The villagers couldn't withstand his exorbitant interest rates. Many who borrowed money lost everything and left for distant lands. Eventually, some people approached the guru and presented their complaints. The guru then said, "I don't have the authority to punish him. However, I'm giving him an opportunity that will either bring him immense wealth or lead to his ruin." The villagers dispersed. The next day, the guru sent for the moneylender and explained the situation to him at the ashram. Accordingly, the moneylender arrived at the guru's place early in the morning. They journeyed into the forest and finally reached the entrance of a cave. At that moment, the guru said, "Inside the cave is a treasure trove of gems the world has never seen. But you can only take one. The entrance will b...

(73) The local chieftain!

The local chieftain of the area where  Mulla (Nasreddin) Hodja  lived and Hodja himself shared a good friendship. The chieftain greatly enjoyed Hodja's actions and his sense of humour. One day, the topic of  Heaven and Hell  came up in their conversation. At that point, the chieftain asked Hodja, "O, my friend, can you show me a way to reach Heaven?" Immediately, Hodja replied, "If you sleep all the time, you can reach Heaven." The chieftain was astonished to hear this. "What nonsense are you talking, man?" Hodja continued, "My Lord, you can reach Heaven only by staying away from  evil deeds  all day long. In your case, the easiest way to do that is to sleep without ever coming out of your room." The chieftain finally grasped the essence of what Hodja was saying. This was because the chieftain spent his entire day forcing labourers to work like  slaves  without giving them their due wages, and he would also lend money to the villagers at exo...

(23) A greedy attempt!

Once upon a time, in the province of Silbaripuram, there resided a farmer named Kumaran. He lived with his wife in a small household; however, they were not blessed with any children. Kumaran was a man of great avarice. Consequently, while taking the milk from his cow to the local tea stall for sale, he would habitually adulterate the milk by adding a certain quantity of water. Observing this malpractice, his wife would often counsel him, saying, "Greed leads only to ultimate ruin. It is highly improper to deceive those who purchase our milk with such immense faith." But Kumaran paid no heed to her words. He would retort, "My dear, if I continue to act like Raja Harishchandra, will I ever be able to afford another cow?" Thus, after several months had elapsed, he managed to accumulate enough coins to purchase a second cow. Carrying his bag of coins, he proceeded towards the cattle fair. The fair was bustling with goats, cows, buffaloes, and bulls. While traversing t...

(7) A Robbery!

In the olden days, in the kingdom of Silbaripuram, there was a time when some lords lived as grandly as emperors. One night, five thieves from the neighboring kingdom of Kosalapuram arrived at the backyard of a lord’s mansion. Since the lord and his family had gone to a festival, the thieves had nothing to fear. However, they did not have the habit of breaking down strong doors. Instead, they had a large monitor lizard (udumbu) in their sack. They tied a rope around the lizard's waist and tossed it onto the upper floor of the mansion. As the lizard gripped the roof tightly, the leanest thief among them climbed up using the rope! Soon, two others followed him to the top. They removed the roof tiles and descended, landing right in the kitchen. Though they were covered in soot, smoke, and cobwebs, they managed to pack all the gold and money from the cellar into a sack. As the thieves walked through a deserted trail under the cover of darkness, all five were muttering the same thought...
