(141) Revenge is like fire!

Somu was a merchant in the land of Silbaripuram. As his business grew, Somu decided to expand it to several other places. For this, more money was needed. At that time, he brought along a friend named Cheeran for the business. However, Cheeran was a traitor. After a few years, he betrayed Somu, took the money, and fled to a nearby village. Somu was overcome with a desire for revenge. He had also hidden a dagger in the folds of his dhoti. His aim was to find Cheeran and kill him. While rushing about in a frenzy, Somu grew tired. He fell asleep under a banyan tree he saw by the roadside. A sage returning from the nearby temple sat down next to Somu to rest. When Somu awoke, the sage introduced himself. Somu's desire for revenge had not subsided at all. Seeing this, the sage said, "You can easily kill your friend. However, you will not be able to escape from the land of Kosalapuram. You will rot in a dark prison for the rest of your life. Now, you decide. Should both of you be d...

(61) A boat ride!

Once, Hojamulla was traveling to a distant country. The journey involved a boat ride across a deep river. There were several people traveling with him. Among them was a rich man. Since this was his first time traveling by water, he was extremely afraid. Hojamulla noticed the rich man was visibly distressed. Hojamulla muttered to himself, "Hmm! The reason this rich man feels fear is the fear of death—the fear of having to leave behind his wealth." When the rich man's disturbance became too much, Hojamulla pushed him into the water! Then, without delay, he grabbed his clothes and pulled him back into the boat. Hojamulla asked, "How is your feeling about fearing the water now?" Trembling, the man replied, "The fear is less now!" Immediately, Hojamulla began his usual philosophy (or moral lesson): "A person who is completely drenched need not fear the water; he won't feel the chill. Only the one who is starving knows the true taste of food. And o...

(49) A trick!

Long ago, the kingdom of Silbaripuram was a mix of villages and forests. It was the peak of summer. One day, a wolf, famished and exhausted, crept out of the jungle and into the village. Spotting a rooster foraging in the backyard, the wolf initially considered pouncing, but quickly realised the rooster would simply fly up into the nearest tree. The wolf decided to use a different trick. He stood a respectable distance away and politely asked the rooster, "Everyone says you are the one who wakes up the people of this village every morning with your beautiful voice. I am truly longing to hear that sound." The flattery swelled the rooster with pride. Immediately, the rooster declared, "Well, watch this!" With that, he closed his eyes and let out a long, drawn-out crow: "Cock-a-doodle-doo..." The moment the rooster closed his eyes and crowed, the wolf lunged, caught the rooster by the wing, and started walking back towards the forest. The rooster did not pan...

(31) A fox defeated the Lion!

Long ago, the entire kingdom of Silbaripuram was a dense forest. One day, a lion was out hunting for prey. He noticed a fox sitting near a rocky crevice, peering intently at something below. The lion crouched patiently, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce. In reality, a few rabbits had spotted the fox earlier and hidden inside the crevice. The fox was also waiting patiently for his prey to come out. However, as it was evening, the fox noticed the long shadow of the lion falling upon the rocks! When he stole a glance behind him, he saw the lion ready to spring. The fox realised he couldn't escape by running up the rocks, and there was a deep pit below; even if he jumped, the lion would easily catch him. He immediately came up with a trick. "O King of the Forest!" he cried out. "I have been meditating at this spot for a long time. I had an inner calling that I would soon meet a heroic death. But I have one final wish—I want a powerful lion to leap through the air...

(10) The clever Fox!

This story dates back to a time when many animals lived in the forests of Silbaripuram. Once, a fox was roaming around in search of prey, as was his daily habit. Even after walking for a long time, he could not find anything to eat. Exhausted by dusk, he lay down somewhere and fell asleep. During the night, he reached the banks of a nearby lake to drink some water. But at that very moment, a tiger arrived right behind him to drink water as well! The tiger muttered to himself, "Ah! I shall eat this fox, drink some water, and then leave." It was a moonlit night. Just as the fox’s mouth touched the water to drink, the reflection of the moon shimmered. At the same time, he caught the scent of the tiger and was startled! Suddenly, he looked up and saw the tiger poised and ready to pounce! In a split second, the fox came up with a clever trick to escape from the tiger. "I have no objection at all to you eating me," the fox said. "After all, foxes are food for tigers...
