(12) A wandering Fox!

In ancient times, the region sharing a border between Silbaripuram and the neighboring kingdom of Kosalapuram was a dense forest. It was home to many wild animals.

One day, a fox was wandering in search of food but couldn't find anything. Frustrated, he sat down to rest and noticed a donkey nearby. Since it was the peak of summer, the donkey was also struggling to find enough to eat.

Gradually, the fox and the donkey became friends. The fox said, "Because of the constant hunting by tigers and lions, the number of animals here has dwindled. Moreover, the small prey I usually catch are all in hiding. Therefore, I am going to the village to catch the chickens raised by humans."

The donkey agreed, saying, "In that case, I will come with you. There are plenty of farmers' fields there with lush crops."

As they walked through the forest toward the village, the birds and monkeys mocked the fox. "Hey, Fox! Aren't you supposed to be clever? Why are you roaming around with a foolish donkey as a friend? His stupidity will eventually land you in deep trouble."

The fox brushed it off lightly, replying, "I have enough wit to overcome any of his blunders."

They reached the village at night. The first area they encountered was filled with vegetable plantations. Immediately, the donkey said, "Let me finish my meal first, then we can go catch your chicken."

The donkey began greedily devouring the ripe vegetables. He ate so much that he reached a point where he could barely even breathe.

Feeling extremely satisfied, the donkey said, "Today is my lucky day! It’s been years since I’ve had such a feast. Because of this, I’m going to sing and dance."

The fox warned him, "This isn't our forest; this is human territory. If you must sing, wait until after I have caught my chicken."

But the foolish donkey didn't listen. In his joy, he began to bray loudly and jump around. Hearing the noise, the villagers woke up. As they came rushing toward them, the fox ran away in anger, thinking, "Oh! I should have listened when the others warned me not to keep company with this donkey."

However, when the donkey tried to run, he couldn't pick up any speed because his stomach was too full. The villagers threw sticks at him and brought him down. They beat him severely from all sides until he lost his life.

Moral: Keeping company with foolish people can often land you in serious trouble.
