(117) The Golden Teeth!

Once upon a time, in the village of Silbaripuram, there lived a very miserly rich man named Ravunni. As his wealth grew, so did his miserliness. He was unmarried and had once told someone that if he got married, his expenses would increase. Years went by, and Ravunni started suffering from various illnesses. Among them, a toothache also appeared. He had four of his front teeth extracted and replaced with four dentures. On his way back, a stranger smiled at Ravunni. But Ravunni pretended not to have seen him. He was afraid the stranger would feign familiarity and ask him for money. From that day on, the stranger would smile at Ravunni every day he saw him. After two weeks, Ravunni smiled for the first time. The stranger was very happy. He was never seen on that path again. When Ravunni became bedridden, none of his relatives came to see him. But the day Ravunni died, the stranger performed all the funeral rites like a relative. The villagers stared at him in surprise. No one asked ...

(98) A foolish man!

Shiromani literally means "the best/foremost one." Once, there lived a servant in a wealthy family who shared this name. However, Shiromani was a man who was utterly mismatched with his name. Yet, the master of the house felt compassion for him because he was the son of Ammini, who had worked diligently in the family household for her entire lifetime before retiring. Despite his compassion, scolding Shiromani for his lack of intelligence became a habit for the master. One time, Shiromani returned from the market carrying a bundle of firewood. He asked the master, "Master, could you hold the firewood while I lower it?" The master burst out laughing and said, "You idiot, just drop it!" The next day, Shiromani came from the market carrying a basket full of clay pots and pans on his head. The master rushed out to help him place it down gently. "Thud!" In the exact manner he had dropped the firewood, the earthen pots were dropped, shattering into pie...

Once upon a time, the kingdom of Silbaripuram was ruled by a king named Rudran. He was a great devotee of the Goddess, but he had an excessive obsession with wealth. He harboured a deep desire: he wanted to be known as the king with the largest collection of gold in the entire world! To achieve this, he secretly performed powerful prayers, yagnas, and poojas. Finally, the Goddess appeared before him and said, "O devotee, you may ask for any boon you desire." The king immediately revealed his wish. The Goddess granted it, saying, "I bless you with as much gold as you desire. From now on, whatever you touch shall turn into solid gold!" The king was overjoyed. He touched a pillar in the palace, and it instantly turned into gold! His bed, throne, crown, sword, and even his clothes all turned into gold. The king felt as if he had conquered the world. However, at lunchtime, when he sat down for a feast and touched the rice, it turned into gold. When he reached for a glas...

(21) A classic folk tale!

Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Silbaripuram, there lived a King named Vikraman. The King had a peculiar nature—he could never admit his own mistakes. Even if very important people pointed out his faults, he would somehow try to brush them aside or cover them up. One day, while the King was chatting with the Queen, she remarked, "Your Majesty, you have a very bad mouth smell (halitosis). You must consult the palace vaidyan (doctor) and take some medicine." Immediately, the King felt like picking up the cane from the table and giving his wife a thrashing, but he controlled his temper. He replied, "I don’t feel like I have any bad breath. Let’s do one thing: we will ask these three servants standing here." The King called the first servant and said, "I will blow air at you; you tell me if there is any smell." When the King blew into his face, the servant honestly said, "Maharaja, there is a very strong bad smell." The King lost his cool instan...
