(195) A Salt Story!

You may have often heard the saying, "Anything without salt is fit for the trash." It implies that food without salt is essentially waste. Shall we read the origin of this story? Long ago, the kingdom of Silbaripuram was ruled by Veeravarman. He had five daughters. It was his custom to hold a gathering of scholars at the palace once a month. During these meetings, he would have his five daughters sit in special seats to encourage their interest in state affairs. Once, during such a gathering, the King felt like asking them a question to demonstrate their virtues to everyone. He asked his eldest daughter: "If you were to give me a gift, what would you give?" She immediately replied: "I would give Father the biggest gemstone." The court cheered, and the King felt proud. When he repeated the question to the second daughter, she said "gold." The third princess said "silver," and the fourth said "wild honey," all of which pleased ...

(169) The power of Respect!

Once upon a time, in England, there was a story that happened. There was a very busy supermarket over there. As part of the supermarket, a big cold storage was functioning. In that cold storage, right in front, a security guard used to always stand. When the staff used to come inside in their cars, and when the customers used to come to the shop, he would welcome everyone. But nobody would even smile back. However, the young woman who was the manager of the freezer unit, whenever she came inside in her car, and also when she went back after work, she used to respectfully smile. One day, this young woman, after closing the door at the end of the freezer unit and leaving, noticed some issues while working. Even though she thought she could fix it, without telling anyone else, she kept doing various things there. It became evening. But finally, when it was time to leave, the automatic sensor door got locked in a way that it couldn't be opened. She screamed very loudly, but nobody he...

(151) A respecting method!

The King of Silbari presented a priceless ring to the Guru in a small wooden box. The Guru was a man of mystical knowledge. Just then, his right hand began to tingle. The right hand said to the Guru, "It is I who picks up food for you to eat. I want the ring." Immediately, the fingers on the hand began to rub against each other. When their quarrel caused a tingling sensation in the hand, the Guru opened his inner eye and asked, "What is your problem?" The thumb replied, "Look at me, Guruji... As the mother figure to the other four fingers, it is I who should receive the ring. People will hold me up as a sign of victory. I also need my strong nail to remove husks from grains. Because my ability is greater, I stand apart strongly from the other fingers on the palm. Everyone calls me the thumb, doesn't they?" Then, the index finger responded thus: "Even though he is a little stout, he is short. Look at me... I am the index finger that shows directi...

(134) Our limitations!

Once upon a time, a farmer and his wife had a fever but were walking to the market for business. Since they were unwell, they didn't carry anything and put sacks full of goods on the donkey. The youngsters under a banyan tree looked at them and said, "Look! They are not carrying a single load to help that poor animal." On the second day, the wife had a thorn stuck in her foot, so she was sitting on the donkey while the farmer walked. When the youngsters saw this, they said, "What a shameless man, making his wife sit on the donkey while he walks with the load." On the third day, due to back pain, the farmer rode the donkey while his wife walked with the load. The youngsters found fault with this too, saying, "How cruel he is! He's making his poor wife walk with the load." On the fourth day, the donkey fell sick. They gave it a rest and let it walk empty. Both of them carried all the loads. The youngsters then said, "What utter fools! They'...

(70) The Devotion!

Long ago, there was an ashram in the village of Silbaripuram. Five disciples lived there, all of them leading lives of strict obedience to their Guru. Among them, the fifth disciple, Shankhu, was a very simple-minded and innocent soul. While the other four were quite capable and smart, Shankhu could not do a single thing without seeking his Guru’s advice or permission. Because of this, the other four often teased him and considered him a fool. Years passed, and the Guru grew too old to manage the ashram. He told them, "All five of you must return to your homes. I am closing this ashram." Shankhu was the most distressed by this news. He asked, "Guruji, once I am home, how will I clear my doubts about the things I do?" The other four disciples burst out laughing. However, the Guru said to Shankhu, "There is a solution. Here is a clay statue of me made by a former disciple. Take it home and place it on your veranda. Whatever happens, ask the statue for guidance as...

(43) The wild Elephant!

Let the next story be one from the Silbaripuram forest of ancient times. Once, there lived a rogue wild elephant, filled with strength and arrogance, roaming the jungle. This elephant disliked even the presence of anyone coming his way. One day, as he walked, he saw a rabbit eating grass on the opposite side. He gave the rabbit a fierce blow with his trunk. The rabbit flew off and landed in a ditch! The rabbit cursed the elephant: "You show this arrogance because I am weak!" Before he finished speaking, the rabbit ran and entered its burrow. As the elephant continued forward, he spotted a bird's nest hanging from a low-lying branch. Immediately, he extended his trunk and broke the branch off! When the eggs shattered, the birds cried out, "We did no harm to you at all. Then why did you commit this deceit?" The elephant walked away without saying a word. Moving a little further, he saw a large anthill and crushed it with one stomp of his foot! The ants scattered ...

(36) The Devotion to Guru!

Long ago, in a village called Silbaripuram, there was an ashram. The five disciples living there were all very obedient to their Guru. However, the fifth disciple, Shanku, was extremely simple-minded and naive. While the other four were quite capable and smart, Shanku couldn't do a single thing without seeking his Guru’s advice or opinion. Because of this, the others mocked him and considered him a fool. As the years passed, the Guru grew too old to manage the ashram. He announced, "I am closing this ashram. All five of you should return to your homes." Shanku was the most devastated. He asked, "Guru, once I am home, how will I clear my doubts about everything?" The other four burst out laughing. But the Guru told Shanku, "There is a solution. Here is a clay statue of me made by a former disciple. Take it home and keep it on your veranda. Ask it questions just as you used to ask me, and then take your decisions. By your devotion to the Guru, you will prosp...

(17) The Four pots!

Once upon a time, in the land of Silbaripuram, a Guruji lived in an ashram with his four disciples. Over the years, it was common for the local King and landlords to offer various gifts to the Guru. Among these gifts sat four distinct pots: one gold-plated, one silver, one copper, and one made of clay. One day, while the four disciples were cleaning the room, they began discussing the pots. What started as a simple conversation quickly turned into a heated argument, with each disciple boasting about which pot was superior. Hearing the commotion, the Guru entered the room and said, "Today, I want the four of you to go to the distant lake and bring back water in these four pots. You may choose whichever pot you like." As soon as the Guru left, a scuffle broke out over the gold-plated pot. The strongest disciple intimidated the others and grabbed it for himself. The second disciple fought for and secured the silver pot, while the third took the copper one. The fourth disciple, ...
