(165) The need of gratitude!

Once upon a time, in Silbaripur kingdom, there was a very simple man named Somu. All his good luck started when he bought a brown horse from the market. This horse helped him go to far places very fast as a middleman for business. Slowly, in every business, he started making profit. Soon, he became a big shot in that place. Somu used to ride on his strong brown horse for everything. He never hesitated to give his horse top quality moth bean, chickpeas, and wheat to eat. Years passed by. In between, the running power of the brown horse started to decrease. At the same time, Somu's behavior towards his horse also started to change. He reduced its food. He got angry with the horse - "If you can't pull much, then you only need less food." Finally, when the horse was no longer good for riding, he went to the horse market and bought another one. For some days, he tied the old brown horse behind the stable where nobody could see it. One day, he went in front of the brown ...

(149) The source of gratitude!

Once upon a time, the land of Silbaripuram was rich with various farmlands. Shankunni, the chieftain, owned most of the land there, and nearly a hundred people worked for him. One day, an unknown disease afflicted all the crops in the chieftain's gardens, leading to extensive crop failure. Consequently, the chieftain faced difficulties even in paying his laborers. One night, the laborers' leader secretly convened a meeting in their hut. "Friends," he said, "there's no point in staying here under the chieftain anymore. It doesn't seem like we'll get paid regularly. After burning the diseased fields and planting new saplings, when will the chieftain start earning again?" The other workers agreed with him. "You're right," they said. "We should leave for the distant Kosala kingdom next night." They walked as a group through the night. After walking a considerable distance, they rested under a banyan tree. A sage, who was sle...

(142) A gratitude with umbrella!

Once upon a time, there lived a common man named Ramu in the land of Silbaripuram. There, the monsoon season lasted longer than usual. Moreover, the summer rains were also strong. He always carried a large umbrella with him. One morning, a light drizzle began. Ramu, holding his umbrella, went to the temple. He was on his way to attend a wedding there. Later, the sun shone brightly. It was when he sat down for the wedding feast that his wet umbrella felt like a burden. He tried to place the umbrella on a table near the crowded area, but it didn't work. He tried to put it on his lap, but that didn't work either. Immediately, Ramu exclaimed loudly, "Damn! This umbrella has become such a nuisance!" He leaned the umbrella against the leg of the table. A colony of ants, which permanently resided under that table, started climbing onto the fabric of the umbrella. They lined up and rested in the folds of the fabric. After the wedding feast, Ramu walked back home with his umb...

(135) The gratitude of a black monkey!

Once upon a time, the kingdom of Silbaripuram was a dense forest. All kinds of animals lived there in abundance. One day, a black monkey was greedily eating a fruit he found on the ground. Suddenly, a lion, who had been stealthily approaching, pounced on him! However, the monkey narrowly escaped and grabbed a vine on the nearest tree, climbing to safety. But when he reached the top, the monkey was startled! A tribesman had tied the vine to the branch to collect honey, and he was in the middle of his work. Meanwhile, the disappointed lion looked up from below. After a moment of thought, the lion realized that humans were tastier than monkeys. So, the lion used a trick: "Hey, black monkey, that's a human who will destroy your entire species. He's the one who makes a black monkey 'rasayanam' (elixir) and sells it. So, bite and scratch him and throw him down!" However, the monkey pretended not to hear. The lion changed his tactic: "Hey, human, if you don...

This is a story from the life of the world-renowned writer Paulo Coelho . It was a time before Paulo had found fame. He wandered in search of new experiences and insights. During his many travels, while passing through Greece , he ran out of money. He felt an immense hunger and stopped in front of a small hotel. Since he had no money, he just looked inside from the street. At the same moment, the hotel owner noticed Paulo. He understood the situation. The owner came out, brought Paulo inside, gave him a meal for free, and sent him on his way. Many years later, Paulo had grown into a famous writer. He once felt the desire to see the old hotel owner and return the favor. But when he reached the old location, the hotel was no longer there. He was told that the owner lived on a farm 200 kilometers away. Paulo went there, met him, and asked, "What can I do for you?" The man immediately replied, "That day, you came to me because you were overcome with hunger. I helped you whe...

(38) The Monk and a Merchant!

In the land of Silbaripuram, there lived a wandering monk. People used to say that he was a citizen of a neighboring country. Most of the time, he would spend his days resting or sleeping under the shade of some tree. One day, a Prabhu (Landlord) was heading to the market in his horse-drawn carriage. He was known for being uncompromising and always traded for excessive profits. As he passed by, he noticed the monk watering some small saplings. Curious to know what the monk was up to, the Prabhu stepped down from his carriage. He asked, "This is just a roadside; what are you doing here?" The monk replied, "I have planted seeds of very tasty varieties of mango and jackfruit, and these are the saplings I’ve raised. I am bringing water from the nearby pond to ensure they don't wither away." Immediately, the Prabhu asked mockingly, "What a fool you are! Won’t an old man like you pass away long before these mango and jackfruit trees ever bear fruit? Look at me—I...

(30) The Hermit and a Duck!

Long ago, there was a large pond in the ashram of a hermit in the land of Silbaripuram. This land had been gifted to the hermit by the King. After many years of intense meditation, the hermit had gained the miraculous power to converse with all living creatures in nature. One day, a flock of ducks arrived at the pond from somewhere far away. They liked the place very much. Addressing the hermit, they asked, "May we live here for the rest of our lives?" The hermit replied, "You may stay. However, the specialty of this pond is that no one will come here to trouble you. Moreover, all the creatures living here must coexist with love for one another." The leader of the ducks immediately promised, "We will never trouble anyone who lives here." Thus, they made the pond their home. Years passed. One day, a lone duck, trembling with the fear of death, arrived at the banks of the pond from some distant land. But when it tried to enter the water, the resident ducks ...

(20) The ungrateful Tiger!

In ancient times, the kingdom of Silbaripuram was a vast wilderness. Eventually, patches of forest were cleared, and people began to settle in small pockets. Among them lived a divine Guru. Many years passed, and one day, while the Guru was meditating under the shade of a tree, a small incident occurred. An eagle had snatched a tiny mouse and was flying high. As the mouse struggled fiercely to escape, it slipped from the eagle’s talons and plummeted toward the earth. As luck would have it, the mouse landed right in the Guru’s lap. The Guru took pity on the creature, fed it, and raised it. The mouse enjoyed a peaceful life in the ashram. However, one day, a neighboring cat tried to hunt the mouse. Terrified, the mouse ran to the Guru for protection. The mouse pleaded, "Guruji, that cat is a threat to my life. I have escaped death by a hair’s breadth many times. I am fed up with living in constant fear. Please, turn me into a cat!" With a simple mantra, the Guru transformed th...
