(152) A lesson of teamwork!

Long time back, when Silbaripuram was just a thick jungle, innit? No tigers or lions and all in that forest. But, loads of elephants were roaming about. One day, around ten young tuskers were munching away, when an old lady elephant came along and said, "Listen up, children! Don't you all go towards that slope on the hill. Naughty humans have dug big pits and covered them up with dry leaves. If you fall into one of those trap pits, you won't be able to climb back out. Humans will catch you and take you away!" Listening to this, most of the elephants decided to give that area a miss. But, there was this one mischievous young tusker who goes, "How can those small humans catch strong fellas like us in this jungle? That's all just rubbish talk!" Just then, his mates tried to stop him, saying, "That elephant mum has seen more of the jungle than all of us put together. So, there must be something in what she's saying." Then, that young tusker tr...

(35) The united brothers!

Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Silbaripuram, there was a bustling market. Chintu was a merchant there, and he had five sons. When they were children, they were the best of friends. However, as they grew into young men, things changed completely. The five of them were constantly fighting. Chintu was deeply saddened to see them behaving like enemies—just like a mongoose and a cobra. Around that time, two powerful bullies arrived at the market from a far-off land. They began threatening the other merchants and forcibly taking over their shops. Anyone who dared to oppose them faced a brutal attack. Seeing the bullies seize shops one by one, Chintu closed his own shop and returned home. When he called his five sons to discuss the problem, they were only interested in blaming each other. Chintu racked his brain, wondering how to bring them together. Finally, he came up with a clever plan. He summoned all five and gave them each a long stick, asking them to break it into equal pieces. Th...

(29) The new King!

Once upon a time, in the land of Silbaripuram, there was a time when humans did not live there. In that forest, there were no lions, tigers, elephants, bears, or leopards to rule. That is to say, the forest was mostly filled with smaller animals. One day, all the animals gathered in a large group around a massive Banyan tree. The wild buffalo said, "Friends, I hear that in every forest, either a lion or a tiger is the King. Even if we don’t have such big animals, we too must have a King!" All the other animals supported this. However, they could not decide who should become the King. Just then, the rabbit said, "The fox is the most intelligent in this forest. Therefore, let’s make the fox our King." Immediately, another rabbit spoke up: "In this forest, hunters from the neighbouring kingdom of Kosalapuram often arrive. To identify them from a distance, the monkey who lives on the tallest tree would be perfect. If the monkey—who has the ability to observe from ...

(13) The 3 friends!

Once upon a time, in the land of Silbaripuram, there lived three close friends. One day, they set off into the forest to collect some honey. After walking a long distance, they spotted a large hive of stingless bees (cheruthen) tucked high up in the hollow of a tree branch. They remarked, "Even if there is only a little honey, the taste of cheruthen is simply superb!" But there was a problem—the tree was completely entwined with wild creepers. These were no ordinary vines, but 'Chorikinanam' (stinging nettle) vines that cause a terrible itch all over the body. Then, one of them suggested, "Because of the stinging vines, we cannot climb the tree. But, if one person stands on another's shoulders, and then the third person climbs on top... we can reach the honeycombs." Everyone agreed to the plan. One by one, they climbed onto each other’s shoulders. Balancing carefully to avoid a fall, the man at the very top stretched his hands out and began to harvest t...
