(196) King Vikraman!
Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Silbaripuram, King Vikraman ruled over the land. Once, the monsoon season lasted longer than usual, causing significant damage to many crops.
Since the mango blossoms had fallen off in the heavy rain, there was a severe shortage of mangoes. Meanwhile, one morning, the King woke up with a craving to eat a mango.
Although he asked his servants for one, they were in a state of distress: "Where will we find mangoes?"
They grumbled to each other in fear. However, when they tried to explain the situation to the King, he became angry. The servants ran all over the kingdom, but they could only find spoiled mangoes. Thus, time passed, and it became evening.
Just then, a traveler arrived in the palace courtyard carrying a small basket. The servants stopped him and asked, "What is in that basket?"
The traveler said, trembling, "I am a traveler who has brought Salem mangoes as a gift for the King."
Immediately, the servants happily brought him before the King. As the King greedily ate a Salem mango, he said, "Because you brought delicious mangoes from afar like an angel of God just when I desired them, count the number of mangoes in his basket and give him that many gold coins before he leaves!"
On his way back, the traveler felt hungry and stopped at a tea shop at a junction. At that moment, the tea shop owner, Ramu, cleverly inquired and learned about the incident.
He muttered to himself, "If this traveler got gold coins equal to the number of mangoes, I will go with a basket full of lemons."
The next day, without opening his shop, he arrived at the palace with a basket of lemons. Without checking what was in the basket, the servants brought him before the King.
Seeing that it was lemons in the basket, the King roared in anger, "I don't feel like drinking lemonade in this rainy weather!"
Saying this, the King began picking up the lemons one by one and throwing them at Ramu. Although it hurt a little, Ramu started to laugh. Seeing this, the King began throwing them with even more force.
However, Ramu continued to laugh out loud. When the lemons were finished, the King asked him, "Why are you laughing even after being hit with lemons?"
Ramu replied, "Your Majesty, having heard this story, my friend is on his way here with a basket of coconuts. I was just laughing, thinking of the King gifting him a 'coconut-throwing' instead of gold coins."
At that reply, the King burst into laughter as well.
