(40) A Horoscope!

Veeramani and Damu, two friends, lived in a village in the kingdom of Silbaripuram. Once, they enrolled to study at the kingdom’s best astrology school. After spending two years residing and studying at the ashram, they bid farewell to their Guru (teacher) and started walking towards their village via the shortcut through the forest. "We must somehow manage to become the court astrologers at the palace," said Veeramani, and Damu agreed. However, at the same time, Damu was thinking differently. He muttered to himself, "The palace does not need two astrology scholars. They will only appoint one person. I must get that job somehow!" As they were walking, the King, who was passing through the forest for a hunt, came across them. The King dismounted his horse and inquired who they were. The King immediately said, "I need to know if you have studied astrology well. Damu, you predict my future. And then, Veeramani." The King kept Veeramani aside. Damu then laid ...

(39) Robert Bruce!

Robert Bruce was a clever King who ruled Scotland, a European country. Once, when the King of the neighboring country, England, launched an attack, he was unable to hold his ground. His army was defeated and fled. Bruce himself managed to escape by a whisker. He ran swiftly and hid inside a cave. As he sat there, deeply dejected and silent, he witnessed a sight— A spider, at the mouth of the cave, was trying to jump from one end to the other to weave its web! In the first jump, it could not reach the other side. It failed the second time as well. However, the spider kept on trying. Three… four… five… six… it failed that many times! But on the seventh attempt, it succeeded in reaching its goal! Watching this gave Bruce a lot of food for thought. He muttered to himself— "If a mere spider does not give up even after seeing its first six attempts go to waste, why can't I, a human being, try again?" He stepped out of the cave. He secretly located his soldiers who had fled, ga...

(38) The Monk and a Merchant!

In the land of Silbaripuram, there lived a wandering monk. People used to say that he was a citizen of a neighboring country. Most of the time, he would spend his days resting or sleeping under the shade of some tree. One day, a Prabhu (Landlord) was heading to the market in his horse-drawn carriage. He was known for being uncompromising and always traded for excessive profits. As he passed by, he noticed the monk watering some small saplings. Curious to know what the monk was up to, the Prabhu stepped down from his carriage. He asked, "This is just a roadside; what are you doing here?" The monk replied, "I have planted seeds of very tasty varieties of mango and jackfruit, and these are the saplings I’ve raised. I am bringing water from the nearby pond to ensure they don't wither away." Immediately, the Prabhu asked mockingly, "What a fool you are! Won’t an old man like you pass away long before these mango and jackfruit trees ever bear fruit? Look at me—I...

(37) A Golden Friendship!

In the Silbaripuram region, there was an ancestral home that kept many pets. Among them, a cat and a dog were very close friends. It was their habit to share whatever food they received. One day, as the cat lay down to sleep, a thought struck him: "The master loves this dog more than me. My importance in this house is fading. If things continue like this, I might even be kicked out soon." That night, after much plotting, he made a decision—he had to trap the dog in some mischief so that he would face the master’s wrath. At daybreak, the master left for the market. He usually returned in the afternoon and sat down for lunch immediately. The cat planned his move to coincide with the master's return. At that time, the dog was fast asleep on the veranda; his main job, after all, was guarding the house all night. Seizing the opportunity, the cat lurked in the kitchen, watching everything closely. The cat noticed a bowl of meat curry served for the master’s lunch. Seeing the m...

(36) The Devotion to Guru!

Long ago, in a village called Silbaripuram, there was an ashram. The five disciples living there were all very obedient to their Guru. However, the fifth disciple, Shanku, was extremely simple-minded and naive. While the other four were quite capable and smart, Shanku couldn't do a single thing without seeking his Guru’s advice or opinion. Because of this, the others mocked him and considered him a fool. As the years passed, the Guru grew too old to manage the ashram. He announced, "I am closing this ashram. All five of you should return to your homes." Shanku was the most devastated. He asked, "Guru, once I am home, how will I clear my doubts about everything?" The other four burst out laughing. But the Guru told Shanku, "There is a solution. Here is a clay statue of me made by a former disciple. Take it home and keep it on your veranda. Ask it questions just as you used to ask me, and then take your decisions. By your devotion to the Guru, you will prosp...

(35) The united brothers!

Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Silbaripuram, there was a bustling market. Chintu was a merchant there, and he had five sons. When they were children, they were the best of friends. However, as they grew into young men, things changed completely. The five of them were constantly fighting. Chintu was deeply saddened to see them behaving like enemies—just like a mongoose and a cobra. Around that time, two powerful bullies arrived at the market from a far-off land. They began threatening the other merchants and forcibly taking over their shops. Anyone who dared to oppose them faced a brutal attack. Seeing the bullies seize shops one by one, Chintu closed his own shop and returned home. When he called his five sons to discuss the problem, they were only interested in blaming each other. Chintu racked his brain, wondering how to bring them together. Finally, he came up with a clever plan. He summoned all five and gave them each a long stick, asking them to break it into equal pieces. Th...
